Pipe & Plumbing Prices in Zambia
Compare PVC pipe, HDPE pipe, valve, and water tank prices. Includes pipe sizing for a 3-bedroom house, Class D vs drainage explained, and water tank sizing guide.
PVC pipes, HDPE, valves, and water tanks for residential plumbing
Plumbing material prices have been relatively stable through 2025-26, with only 3-5% increases. PVC pipe prices track petroleum costs (PVC is a petrochemical product). Water tank prices increased 8-10% due to raw polyethylene import costs. HDPE pipe remains competitive for underground runs.

Pipe Types Explained
🔵 Class D (Pressure)
Blue or grey · For water supply · Glued joints · Can handle pump/tank pressure
⚪ Drainage
White or brown · Gravity flow only · Push-fit rubber rings · For waste/sewer
⚫ HDPE
Black polyethylene · Flexible · Underground runs · Borehole to tank · Heat-fused joints
Water Tank Sizing
Lusaka experiences periodic water supply interruptions. A properly sized water tank provides crucial backup:
- 2,500L — Minimum for a family of 4-6. Provides 2-3 days backup. ZMK 2,500-3,500.
- 5,000L — Recommended for most families. Provides 4-5 days backup. ZMK 4,000-5,500.
- 10,000L — For borehole systems or commercial use. Full independence. ZMK 7,000-9,500.
Elevation matters: Place your tank on a 3-metre steel stand to achieve gravity pressure of approximately 0.3 bar — enough for showers and taps but not geysers (which need a pump or pressurised system). Tank stands cost ZMK 800-1,500 for a 2,500L capacity.
Plumbing Questions Answered
How much does plumbing cost for a 3-bedroom house in Zambia?
Total plumbing materials cost approximately ZMK 5,000–8,000, including: PVC pipes and fittings (ZMK 1,500-2,500), water tank 2,500L (ZMK 2,500-3,500), taps and mixers (ZMK 500-1,500), toilet suite (ZMK 800-2,000), and geyser (ZMK 2,000-5,000 optional). Professional plumber labour adds ZMK 1,500-3,000. Total: ZMK 6,500-11,000 for a standard installation with one bathroom and kitchen.
What is the difference between Class D and drainage pipes?
Class D pipes (blue or grey) are pressure-rated for clean water supply — they can handle water pressure from tanks and boreholes. Drainage pipes (white or brown) are designed only for gravity flow and cannot withstand internal pressure. Never use drainage pipe for water supply. Class D pipes use solvent cement (glue) joints; drainage pipes use push-fit rubber ring joints.
What size water tank do I need?
For a family of 4-6 people: 2,500L is minimum (provides 2-3 days of backup during supply interruptions). 5,000L is recommended — enough for 4-5 days without municipal supply, which is common during ZESCO load shedding or Lusaka Water supply cuts. If you have a borehole, 10,000L gives you independence from municipal supply entirely. Elevated tanks (on a 3m+ stand) provide gravity pressure without a pump.
Should I use PVC or HDPE pipe for my borehole?
Use HDPE (black polyethylene) pipe for underground runs from borehole to tank — it's flexible, handles ground movement, doesn't crack in cold weather, and comes in 100m coils (fewer joints = fewer leak points). Use PVC for above-ground and in-wall runs where rigidity and neat appearance matter. Never bury PVC directly underground — it becomes brittle from temperature cycling.
