The MTN-Lumos solar inverter system was created to provide Zambians with solar power for basic needs at an affordable cost. If you’re having issues with charging your mobile phone or laptop or lighting up your rooms at night, the MTN “Yellow Box” might be all you need.
If you’re looking to know more about the MTN Lumos system, we already published this detailed post on it:
In this post, however, we’d be looking at the MTN solar inverter price in Zambia as well as the requirements for getting it, and other related important pieces of information.
MTN Mobile Electricity: Pricing Model
It’s important to note that the MTN-Lumos solar power system is a Pay As You Go setup. That is, it allows you to enjoy the package without having to pay for it at once. Rather, you can pay in bits over time as you continue enjoying the device. This makes it easy for most people to ultimately own the setup (after paying up) without breaking the bank.
MTN Solar Electricity Price in Zambia
Due to its flexible pricing model, the MTN Lumos mobile electricity service has a number of payment plan options that you can choose from, depending on your financial strength.
Here are the available payment plans:
- Daily payment == KW230 (per day)
- Weekly payment == KW1,500 (per week)
- 20 days == KW3,800 (every 20 days)
- 30 days == KW4,850 (per month)
- 60 days == KW9,000 (bimonthly)
- 90 days == KW12,600 (quarterly)
- 180 days == KW23,400 (every 6 months)
- 365 days == KW46,720 (per year)
- 1800 days == KW219,000 (one-time pay)
Now, there are 5-day and 10-day plans. You can contact the MTN-Lumos customer care for more information on these.
Important points to note
Upon joining the service, you have to pay a one-time setup and installation fee of KW28,000. This fee is different from the subscription/repayment plans listed above.
The whole package remains the property of MTN-Lumos, and they reserve the right to withdraw it from you at any time if you violate the terms and conditions. So, don’t make the mistake of trying to cut corners with the service or the components of the setup.
The less frequently you pay, the cheaper you get to pay as a daily average. For example, daily payment attracts KW230 per day, while monthly payment attracts KW4,850 (KW162 daily average), so your best bet is to pay monthly, quarterly, or even yearly, if possible.
If you’re paying daily, weekly, or biweekly, you must pay for a minimum of 20 days every month, whether you use the system or not. If you violate this rule, you risk service termination and seizure of your setup by MTN-Lumos.
Once your payment is due, the system automatically switches to debit you the daily plan amount until you decide to renew. If you don’t have enough credit to cover this daily payment for a few days, the system would be locked, and you won’t be able to enjoy solar power from the setup.
How to Join the MTN Lumos Mobile Electricity Service
To start enjoying MTN Lumos solar power, all you need to do is visit your nearest local store with an active MTN SIM card already registered in your name and a valid ID card. Note that your personal information as profiled during the SIM card registration must be the same as portrayed on your ID card. You will also be required to provide 2 willing guarantors. Also, you must have enough money to procure credit for the activation plan.
So, here’s a breakdown of the initial cost:
- Setup fee: KW26,000
- Activation plan: KW4,500 (for the first 30 days. You can switch to your preferred plan after)
- Installation fee: KW2,000

So, you must have your KW32,500 ready before proceeding to sign up for the service.
After the necessary documentation, authorized and professional MTN-Lumos installers would visit your location to install your solar power setup, after which you can start enjoying the service.
MTN Lumos Recharge Code: How to Recharge Your Inverter
Once you’ve had your MTN Lumos setup installed, you can start recharging to enjoy solar power. All you need to do is send your preferred payment plan (number of days) to 317 after loading enough credit to cover for the payment.
For example, if you’re subscribing for 5 days, just text “5” to 317. Do the same for any number of days based on your preferred plan.
MTN-Lumos Solar System: The One-time Purchase Option
For subscribers who would prefer to have the MTN Lumos solar setup to themselves without committing to a long-term payment plan, the system is now available for a one-time purchase on Jumia Zambia’s website.
Even more interesting is the fact that Lumos unveiled a more powerful option alongside the regular Yellow Box. They termed the regular option, “Lumos Eco” and the more powerful option, “Lumos Prime”.
With the development, Lumos has made its solar power setup available to the general public. So, Zambians can now choose between the pay-as-you-go option or the one-time purchase.
