Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to pay road tax in Zambia?

Road tax (Motor Vehicle License) is typically paid annually, but RTSA allows for quarterly (every 3 months) or half-yearly payments. Note that RTSA frequently reviews fees, and as of March 1, 2026, all RTSA Service Centres have transitioned to a fully cashless payment system.

Are road toll fees the same as Road Tax?

No, Toll Fees are separate. Beginning January 1, 2026, new toll rates apply: Small vehicles remain at K20, Light vehicles (3.5โ€“6.5 tonnes) are K40, and Heavy vehicles (4 axles+) are K300 per passage. Specific toll stations like Michael Chilufya Sata charge higher rates for heavy vehicles.

Can I pay my road tax online?

Yes, RTSA has an online payment portal (e-ZAMTIS), and you can also pay for Road Tax, Fitness, and Toll Fees via mobile money or banking apps. This is the primary method now following the 2026 cashless directive.

Do I need both Road Tax and Fitness?

Yes. Road Tax is your license to use the road network, while the Fitness Certificate proves your vehicle is mechanically safe. Both must be up-to-date to avoid significant spot fines or impoundment.
